Today I took the top off a scanner, so I could turn it upside down and scan the surface underneath it. I love the scale and level of detail scanners provide, I just wanted to be able to put bigger things on top of / underneath it. The next progression for this idea is to put moving stuff underneath it (ants, water, etc.), to see how the moving scanner head stretches and crushes certain elements within the scene. That’s if my scanner lasts, as it makes some odd noises whilst scanning upside down.
Here is the first half decent result. Notice the odd artifacts (lines about 1/8th of the way down…). I wish I could replicate this effect over the whole image. Note: there is a massive (1600px wide / 2mb+) version here, to try to show the detail better.
I found an old kaleidoscope kit the other day and decided to build it. I loved the look of the images it created so much that I decided to photograph it:
This led me to create a bigger scale kaleidoscope to expand on the options. The results were inspiring. They appealed to me in particular because of the ‘generative art’ aspect, which is a passion of mine. The idea of mixing some of my computer generated art pieces with physical mirrors and lights rather excites me. I have decided to develop this project; more reflective sides, motion, and through the scale of the kaleidoscopes themselves. I’d love to build one big enough to stand in…but one step at a time.

Your World is a project I devised where the content is fully ‘user’ generated. I give you a disposable camera and a stamped addressed return envelope; you fill the camera with photos of Your World and send it back to me for processing.
I am deeply interested in the relationship between photographer and subject. The relationship and interaction can have a profound effect on the imagery produced. In Your World I have removed myself entirely from this equation.
